Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Oblong 4to. (23 x 31 cm.) 42p. Musical scores with words and directions for games to be played with the music. Stapled booklet in red pictorial wrappers printed in black and with a vignette on the front wrapper of several children singing and dancing with stylized trees in the background. Very minor wear to extremities, wrappers very lightly soiled, just touches of rust on the staples, last pages shows some red spot transfers from rear wrapper (but not seriously detrimental to the text), corners square and flat, previous owner¿s handwritten name and address on first page (Alice Longley, Bellingham, WA), else very good to near fine with no other internal markings. Mari Ruef Hofer 1866-1929] was a pioneer worker in the field of Music Education, especially in relation to the kindergarten work. She was a graduate of Mt. Carroll Seminary (Illinois), where she won honors in literature and vocal music. Hofer studied at the University of Chicago with Professor William. L. Tomlins and became identified with the Free Kindergarten and the Chicago Kindergarten College training classes in the capacity of instructor in vocal music. Here she came into contact with the most advanced thought of the new education in the West, under such leaders as Colonel Parker, Miss Harrison, Miss Josephine Locke, and the literary schools of Wm. Harris, Davidson, and Snider. She was called to assist in the high school work, under the direction of Mr. Tomlins, which she continued for three years, becoming thoroughly familiar with this department of school music. Part of Hofer¿s time was given to music work in the social settlements of Chicago. Of this work, Mary McDowell of the Chicago University Settlement says, ¿We have felt from the beginning of our settlement life that Miss Hofer, with her charm of music, has been more perhaps than any other a civilizing force in the community. Through her teaching, ideals and poetry, as well as sweet sounds, have come into child life, and have been carried to the home, the school, and the church.¿ Her last public school work was the successful organizing of Music and Games in Rochester, New York. From Rochester, she went to Teachers' College in New York City, where she was both an Extension Lecturer for the College and in the New York Public School Lecture Course. She was also Instructor of Music in the New York Froebel Normal School. [some information from Shimer College (a later iteration of Mt. Carrol Seminary) Wiki] Hofer produced several works on music and dance, including the following: POLITE AND SOCIAL DANCES (1917), FESTIVAL AND CIVIC PAY FROM GREEK AND ROMAN TALES (1926), and many others.
