Two essays on Christian Science by Mark Twain collected into book form. The first part on religion and its healing claims in general and Christian Science in particular begins with a humorous fictitious article on his falling over a cliff in Austria and breaking some bones, and was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. with later additional material. The second part with material written from 1903 takes the form of a critique of Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), the founder of the faith. In fact it may be considered that Twain displayed an ambivalent attitude to Christian Science, coupling hostility towards its founder, whom he also professed to admire, as a threat to US democracy, with an acceptance of some of its healing claims (see Squires, Healing the Nation, Indiana UP, 2017).
