The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table. By Oliver Wendell Holmes and printed in Boston by Phillips, Sampson, and Company. 1858, 373 pp, 7.25 x 5 , 8vo, hardcover full cloth. Overall good. Publisher s original cloth binding with gilt lettering and decorations to spine. Light rubbing and wear to exterior, primarily along edges and corners. Minor wear to hinges at front and rear, along with some splitting towards top after page 24. Text block remains bound well with minor wear. Light markings and marginalia, primarily at front. Advertisements to pastedowns and end pages at front and rear. Periodic black-and-white sketches throughout. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. A scarce 1st edition and 1st state of the prominent work by Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), being the first of ultimately three books of the Breakfast-Table series. Holmes was also the son of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841-1935), a Supreme Court justice known for his opinions on civil liberties and general progressive decisions. COLL1858ABFB.
