CONFESSIONS OF A BOHEMIAN TORY is a compilation of his finest articles, covering with acuity and wisdom society, religion, education, and politics. In these pages, Kirk recalls conversations with workers and thinkers of all nations. He describes operations of "Progress with a capital P" in many countries, and warns sharply against national and international trends toward certain kinds of progress ~against giving the unconditional public aid that destroys self~reliance and personal initiative. Although he holds degrees from a number of institutions, both American and British, Kirk maintains his most valuable education has come from traveling and talking with such men as T. S. Eliot and Percy Wyndham Lewis. Vivid sketches of these and other prominent people illustrate the intellect to which Kirk looks for the world's ultimate well~being. But formal education, he says, fails to provide its students with any remarkable knowledge or desire for growth. He places the blame for this on the teachers and, in particular, on the heads of colleges, who are faced with so many demands that it is impossible to devote adequate time and energy to teaching. In many cases, he says, they are simply uninterested in the basic cause of scholarship. Other indications of this universal disinterest are discussed in essays on religion, such as "Empty Churches." Kirk attributes the major decline in church attendance to a general vague feeling that the precarious global affairs may not be solvable. And even those who believe there is a solution often fail to associate it with religion. Brilliant color marks Kirk's writing in his selections on travel, His studies of England, Scotland, and Africa bring to life the customs anc! legends of the inhabitants of these lands, and add great dimension to the reader's understanding of them. The basic and solidly founded personal philosophy of Russell Kirk relates all the essays, despite the great diversity of subject and locale. All express his deep concern with the future of the world and its people. And all reveal his faith in Conservative principles as political, social, and ethical guides to achieve, in that future, peace and freedom. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 2071802
