[Edinburgh] 1815, Thomson's. Single large sheet size: 72 x 54.5 cm., map size: 61 x 49 cm., hand-colored, copper etched very good, center folded, with British mile scale, center folded. R A R E This grand scale map shows all of Japan from Island of Jesso [Hokkaido], Sado Island, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima Island, the Goto Islands and a few scattered small islands off of the Gulf of Jeddo. At the extreme North, is Chinese Tartary, the Songari River, then Korea begins with Pingan, Hienkin, Kiang, Hoanghai, Kingk, Tchusin, Kingha, Tchuenlo, with Quelpert Island and other small islands to the South, the Straits of Corea, Sea of Japan, North Pacific & Eastern Seas cited. Each province is outlined and colored in a dif- ferent color by hand. At the bottom is:"Drawn & Engraved for Thomason's New General Atlas, 16th, Aug. 1815." This superb and stunningly handsome work is without any flaw to speak of and is suitable for display in any library. Mountains, towns and cities named, province divisions shown, rivers and other details noted. Clean and large scale maps of this subject and period are not common. Nicely executed. *.
