Map. Colored engraving. Image measures 8 1/4 x 10 5/8 inches. This rare map depicts Canada as it was in 1817, as Upper and Lower Canada. Denotes part of the Great Lakes, forests and indigenous hunting grounds. Relief is depicted by hachure. Toronto is still known as York. Part of New England is included as well. Scuffs and toning and chips to margins but otherwise in good condition. Drawn by Samuel Lewis and engraved by H. S. Tanner. Samuel Lewis (c. 1754-1822), who drew this map, was a prolific geographer based in Philadelphia. Henry Schenck Tanner (1786-2858) was an American cartographer and statistical geographer. Born in New York, he moved to Philadelphia where he established his well-known publishing company with his brother. Tanner was the first American to publish a map of Texas, which subsequently went through eight editions. However, he is best known and most renowned for his New American Atlas.
