4to. Green decorative cloth designed and lettered in gilt. Illustrated title page and ten colour lithographs. This copy has been expertly rebacked with the original cloth laid down; some wear to tips, a very good copy. There is some chipping to the fore-edges and margins of a few leaves. Tipped into the front of this copy is an autograph letter dated Edinburgh 15 June 1836. The letter is addressed to Lieut. Colonel Fitzgibbon, Toronto, and is from one Alex Clerk, introducing and recommending its carrier, Alexander Dingwall Fordyce. Written on two sides, the letter refers to the carrier moving to Upper Canada with his family, mutual friends, other matters. Lieut. Colonel Fitzgibbon was a notable military man, and father to the artist Agnes Fitzgibbon's first husband, Charles Thomas Fitzgibbon. The book bears an inscription to Elizabeth Dingwall Fordyce in Fergus, Ontario in 1870, probably from her husband, the one mentioned in the enclosed letter; she has inscribed the book on to another friend in 1891. An interesting association. This is the second edition of 1869, with the title in a large diamond on the front cover.
