Attractive full leather binding with two working clasps. Gilt detailing to edges and spine. Gilt to faces of page block. Spine faded. Marbled pastedowns and endpapers. Previous ownership name, address and date (1874) to first blank. Title page opposite dedication page. Second edition with improvements, as stated. General spotting and toning throughout. Folding map of England and Wales to front, cut into sections, along folds for use when in transit (designed for this purpose with wide borders that can be cut and removed). Second folding map of England and Wales relating to cross-roads, cut in the same way, prior to the section on the cross-roads. Both maps spotted, creased and repaired. All pages checked and present as required. To the rear, is a statement of the famous court proceedings between Cary and Longman (Paterson), along with "a motion for a new trial" of Cary v Longman (Paterson). Composition: Title; dedication; map; advertisement (how to use the guide); statement to the public regarding the plagiarism case; index; Cary advert; Itinerary; second map; cross-roads; packet boat details (2pp); index to country seats; statement of proceedings (as previously mentioned); Cary adverts (2pp) including images of globes. An attractive copy with the clasps ensuring that the binding has remained tight. The inclusion of the trial details and request for retrial give added interest. (Ud4).
