Large octavo, six works in two volumes: pp. 96, 160, 120, 165, 115, 115, text printed in double columns, original red cloth, spine panels stamped in gold. First edition in English, later issues or printings. A bind-up of six volumes, all translated by Alfred Allinson. and part of a uniform edition of "The Novels of Alexandre Dumas." Of interest for two supernatural works: THE CASTLE OF EPPSTEIN and THE WOLF-LEADER. THE CASTLE OF EPPSTEIN, a translation of LE CHATEAU D'EPPSTEIN (1844), is a Gothic romance with ghosts and hauntings. THE WOLF-LEADER, first published in Paris by Cadot in 1857 in three volumes, is "Dumas's most successful supernatural work by far . an entertaining historical romance based on traditional legends of the werewolf." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 138. A very curious printing or issue, some parts showing evidence of separate issue, but none of these parts are illustrated with inserted plates found in some of the first printings. Furthermore, the title leaf for CONSCIENCE is most likely a facsimile. Nevertheless, these volumes are very hard to find in first printing format and the six volumes are standard texts of these works. Very good. (#169981). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 169981

Hardback. Zustand: Fine. Stewart Orr (illustrator). First Edition. Dumas, Alexandre. The Castle of Eppstein. Newly translated by Alfred Allinson. London: Methuen & Co., n.d. [1904]. First edition in English. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-96. Original red decorative cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold and blind, bottom edge untrimmed, printed in double columns. Illustrated by Stewart Orr with three inserted full-color plates. The title page of this issue correctly credits the three illustrations to Stewart Orr rather than Gordon Browne. Part of a uniform edition, with the title page proclaiming, "The Novels of Alexandre Dumas." A touch of bowing to boards (probably due to dryness of the winter air in my office, thus a temporary condition), a fine bright copy. #3535. $350. A translation of Le chateau d'Eppstein (1844). "Gothic novel of ghosts and hauntings." -- Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, vol. I, p. 73, noting correctly the simultaneous publication of these Methuen Dumas romances in pictorial wrappers as well as this standard cloth binding. ". a Gothic thriller ." -- Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 138. A more recent English translation by Norma Lorre Goodrich was published in 1989 with a 12-page essay by her on how this novel fits into the work of Dumas and the tradition of the Gothic.
