London, printed for T.Jefferys, 1752. First English edition. 12mo. (viii), 184pp. Illustrated with an etched frontispiece portrait of Rembrandt. The first English language catalogue raisonne of Rembrandt s etchings, originally published in French and compiled by Parisian art dealer Edme-Francois Gersaint. The catalogue lists 342 works definitely attributed to the artist and another 27 which the author claims are falsely attributed to Rembrandt. The catalogue goes on to list another 49 works etched after Rembrandt rather than by him and then lists a number of works by various scholars of the artist. Bound in contemporary speckled calf boards with a 20th century rebacked spine lettered in gold. A small ink library stamp to the front (modern) endpaper. Otherwise, a very clean copy with the text block sound and the binding in good condition. Further photographs available on request.
