The sequel to Tiers of War finds two friends still embroiled in the sanguinary Civil War that decimated American society on both sides of the conflict with impunity. Geoff Tucker and Thomas Russell grew up like brothers, but from families of different socio-economic backgrounds, and initially fought on opposite sides. One now fights to claw his way back from the insatiable demons of opium and alcohol addiction, tested further by the nightly specters of the lives he took in war, with increasing calloused indifference. Lincoln usurped powers beyond those bestowed by the Constitution in the executive office and issues the Emancipation Proclamation. The presidential move caused a massive stir on both sides of the Mason Dixon line, causing editorial outrage and desertion in the Union ranks. One who walked away, knowing the full measure of the prescribed punishment, was Thomas Russell. The late lieutenant and mapmaker for the Union, now hopes to join Mosby’s rangers operating in Northern Virginia. He must gain the trust of the daring partisan leader and his cagey band of warriors under his command if he is to remain close to the love of his life, a beautiful Confederate spy. Come along for the journey.
