Beschreibung
A series of informal essays by Sainte-Beuve, the most powerful literary critic of 19th century France. Classically educated, and a graduate of the University of Paris, hemade his wayinto journalism. He was thus drawn into a circle of Romantic writers and poets. In 1831 he began to contribute articles to a new periodical, theRevue des Deux Mondes. It was in thesethat he developed his style of considering the biographical background of living writers, and applying it in the exploration of their mentality. After a period of political turbulence, in which he found himself at variance with the government of Louis-Phillippe, Saint-Beuve returned to paris in 1849. He was asked by Louis Veron, the editor ofLe Constitutionnelto write a weekly article on current literary topics, to appear every Monday. That was the start of this collection. The first editionwas three volumes, publishedin 1851. This set is fromthe definitivethird edition, running to 15 volumes, published between 1857-62. Of those 15, collected here are volumes VII to XIII, as well as the 'Table' - a general reference to the set, which is bound together with some "portraits de femmes" and "portraits litteraires." According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, "prodigious research went into each 3,000 word 'chat'. Saint-Beuve, who wished his readers to have a well-rounded view of his subjects, provided extensive data on such matters as an author's character, family background, physical appearance, education, religion, love-affairs, and friendships." Collated: each volume presentcomplete. In half calf with gilt detailing to the spines. Volumes are generally a little rubbed to the extremities, particularly the heads and tails of the spine. The spines are faded, and show a little shelf-wear. The joints are a little tender on volume seven, but still firm. Internally, generally clean and bright. The exceptions consist of a little light foxing to the first few pages of volume seven, to the last few pages of volume ten, and the first few pages of volume twelve. The pages are untrimmed, and as such the foredges are a little dirty. Generally firmly bound. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers FGN23-C-1
