The back of the wrapper has the testimony of Dr. Archibald Alexander on the Church's need for ministers.The causes answered by the author are The Want of Sufficient Piety, The Lack of a Definite Call, Poverty, Advanced Age, Health, the Lack of Early Education, Being Already Set in an Occupation, Low Salary of Ministers, Opposition from Relatives, The Want of Natural Ability, Being from a Low Status Family, and that the Work would be Too Vast.Cortlandt Van Rensselaer (1808-1860), b. Albany, NY; d. Burlington, NJ. He graduated from Yale in 1827, afterwards taking studies at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and at Princeton Theological Seminary. He was a Presbyterian missionary to slaves in Virginia (1833-1835), pastor of the church at Burlington, NJ (1827), and of the Second Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC (1841).
