TWO TITLES BOUND TOGETHER in the ONE BOOK: "The Chace, a Poem" (BOUND WITH) "Hobbinol, or the Rural Games, a Burlesque Poem, in Blank Verse". This volume contains the FIFTH EDITION of The Chace (published 1767) & the FIFTH EDITION of Hobbinol (published 1768). Each title with "The Fifth Edition" printed to respective title page. The Chace was first published in 1735, Hobbinol first published 1740. Each title with a preface. The Chace contains two prefatory poems in praise of the piece, by John Nixon, & J. Tracy. Both The Chace & Hobbinol were published in London - printed for W. Bowyer, W. Strahan, & R. Baldwin. Illustrated with a total of 8 b&w engravings, including frontispiece to The Chace (plus engravings facing pages 9, 36, 94, 122, & in Hobbinol facing pages 21, 48, 70). The illustrations are by Anthony Walker (1726-1765). English poet William Somerville (1675-1742) was the eldest son of a country gentleman, and was born at Edstone, in the parish of Warren, Warwickshire. The Chace (The Chase) is perhaps his most famous poem which is in blank verse and due to his knowledge of sports he was able to write this poem with great enthusiasm. It passed through many editions. This copy contains heraldic bookplate to front pastedown of British landed gentry William Bennet Martin (1796-1847) of Worsborough Hall, Yorkshire, who inherited the property in 1839, on the death of his father Henry Martin (who was son of Captain William Martin, R.N.). Small volume. Laid paper. Bound in full leather, raised bands, gilt-lettered leather label to spine, gilt-ruled edges. With contemporary ink signature to ffep of "Joseph Leeds" (or Seeds?) & dated 1767 (the year of publication).
