Inhaltsangabe: This beautifully designed hardcover edition contains the complete novels of Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and A Christmas Carol. This book contains the original illustrations, and this beautiful collection of Dickens?s masterpieces is a perfect gift for classic literature lovers and collectors.
Charles Dickens had a hard childhood, with a bankrupt father, little schooling and a miserable time in a blacking factory sticking labels on tins of boot polish. This is reflected in his three great novels of personal development, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and Oliver Twist. A Christmas Carol is both a ghost story and a moral tale that has defined the pattern of Christmas celebrations from Victorian to modern times. These four books in one volume represent much of Dickens' finest writing.
Great Expectations was the only one of these books not to be illustrated under the author's direction, but shortly after his death his publishers commissioned F.W. Pailthorpe to prepare the illustrations that are reproduced here. David Copperfield is illustrated by H.K. Brown, Oliver Twist by George Cruikshank, and A Christmas Carol by John Leech, the original illustrators of the books.
Über den Autor: Charles Dickens was born in 1812. His early life lacked stability and his father was imprisoned as a debtor. In 1827 he went to work at a law firm, and he subsequently worked as a freelance reporter. Great success followed his first book, The Pickwick Papers, and his novels have become popular and critical classics. They include Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Bleak House, and A Tale of Two Cities. He combined a populist touch with a growing concern for problems in society. Dickens died in 1870, and has been lauded ever since as one of the greatest writers in the English language.

Buchbeschreibung Pan MacMillan, United Kingdom, 2011. Hardback. Buchzustand: New. Phiz , F.W. Pailthorpe (illustrator). 304 x 242 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. David Copperfield was Dickens favourite child and is a novel of personal development with richly comic as well as deeply poignant moments. Great Expectations also traces the progress of a young man through life but, as a novel of the author s maturity, is expressed in subtler shades of nuance. Oliver Twist is more black-and-white than either, highlighting the incorruptibility of young Oliver as he battles with the evil of Fagin and Bill Sikes. A Christmas Carol is both a ghost story and a moral tale, which defined the pattern of Christmas celebrations. The four books in one volume represent much of Dickens finest writing.
