Beschreibung:

8vo, pasted down frontispiece of Dickens as Captain Bobadil, vignette title-page, 11 plates (some with tissue-guards, loose or attached), vignette, [ix]-xi - [xii-xiii] - xiv-xvi, errata slip tipped-in, [17] -18-367pp, 19pp advertisements including rear pastedown, publisher's green cloth, gilt, blind ruled boards. Extremities slightly rubbed; front inner hinge cracked but holding; frontispiece creased; a very good copy. CHARLES DICKENS' AUTOGRAPH on unevenly cut white paper pasted to half-title: the signature is in blue ink which he used fairly regularly in later life and has the typical bold flourishes beneath, some eight in number. It closely matches the signatures reproduced in Rawlins: 'Four Hundred Years of British Autographs' , London, 1970, and elsewhere, and is being sold as genuine. Buchnummer des Verkäufers

Buchbeschreibung John Camden Hotten, [1874?], 1874. 8vo., Third Edition, with an engraved title-vignette, neat contemporary signature on advertisement leaf, some light spotting to text; original decorative green cloth, upper board elaborately blocked in gilt and black, gilt back, black endpapers, uncut, a very good, bright copy. With the embossed trade stamp of W H Smith on front free endpaper. The first life of Dickens, first published in 1870 barely three weeks after Dickens' death. BLPC gives the author as Henry Thomas Taverner (acknowledged in the publisher's preliminary note) but the work is also attributed to Joseph Grego and William Moy Thomas. NCBEL gives joint authorship to Taverner and Hotten himself (see NCBEL III p.828). The work includes an extensive Appendix of anecdotes and reminiscences. An attractive if slightly aged copy. This edition is apparently not listed in BLPC. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12890

Buchbeschreibung John Camden Hotten. [1870]., London., 1870. First Edition.. Numerous illustrations, including frontispiece illustration of Dickens as Captain Bobadil and vignette of Bleak House on title page. 367 pp. + 20 pp. illustrated publisher's catalogue. Small 8vo. Green publisher's cloth, titled in gilt on spine and ruled in the blind on covers. Grey coated end papers. Half Title. Errata slip inserted after Table of Contents. Oxford DND, for Hotten. Podeschi H442. VanderPoel E2. NCBEL III 828. Published but 3 weeks after Dickens's sudden death of apoplexy in June, 1870 this volume is a brief biograohy of Charles Dickens by the puiblisher John Camden Hotten (1832-1873, whose firm was later bought by Chatto and Windus. The preliminary comments by Hotten are dated 29 June 1870. Hotten's own writings of biography were sometimes published under the pseudonym of Theodore Taylor. With a deep interest in erotica and pornography, Hotten published Swinburne's, poems freshly banned in its first edition (Moxon), persuaded Swinburne to provide truly erotic verse, and also introduced American writers and humorists to Great Britain, including James Russell Lowell ("Biglow Papers"), Ambrose Bierce, Artemus Ward, Mark Twain, O. W. Holmes, Bret Harte and Walt Whitman. This biography of Dickens was one of several rushed into print upon Dickens's unanticipated death, perhaps even the first, in contention with that by George Augustus Sala. Binder's tag "(W. Bone & Son") laid down on rear pastedown Wear at edges of spine and corners. Shaken, especially at middle of text block. Mild toning of a few preliminary sheets. Front end paper starting with strip of coating lost at gutter. Else, Good +. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 11554

Buchbeschreibung John Camden Hotten. (on spine labeled Chapman & Hall)., London., 1870. Third Edition. Illustrated. Frontispiece engraving of Rochester Castle. 367 pp. with Appendix. 8vo. Green publisher's cloth, titled in gilt on spine and front cover, with florid decoration in black and gilt on spine and front cover. Text surrounded by single ruled border; elaborate initial letters at start of each chapter and engraved heading. Dark green coated end papers. T.e.g. Podeschi H443. VanderPoel E2. NCBEL III, 828, This work has been attributed to Theodore Taylor, a pseudonym for John Camden Hotten (1832-73). It was actually by Tavener (see "Prelimiinary", p.xi). It has also been attributed to Joseph Grego (1843-1908) and William Moy Thomas (1828-1910) (see OCLC, World Cat entry). This is a hasty biography of Dickerns, done within a few weeks of his unexpected death. Bookplate laid down on front free end paper by former owner: "James Edwin Cooper". Vignette of "Bleak House" at Broadstairs on title page. The "Preliminary" is dated 29th June, 1870. The appendix is entitled "Anecdotes and Reminiscences". George Sala's long obituary biography in the Daily Telegraph of London on 10 June 1870, one day after Dickens' death, was promptly expanded by Sala and published also in 1870 on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, rivalling this primarily literary biography by Taverner. Foxing mostly on page edges and preliminaries. Slight wrinkling of front end papers and front cover. Mild wear at edges of spine and front hinge with small break at front hinge. Else, Good +.
