DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: In a handwritten 2 page letter, Richmal Crompton writes to Mrs Watt with what she hopes is the information ‘Ann’ wanted ‘about the child in Bristol’. She says, ‘I hope I got hold of the right end of the story. I seldom do!’ She also expresses her pleasure at seeing Mrs Watt at Hutchison House recently and signs off saying she hopes Mrs Watt sold her house ‘for a fabulous sum’. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Richmal Crompton Lamburn started her career as a teacher but took up full time writing after polio left her without the use of her right leg. She is undoubtedly best known for her stories of William and his escapades and he first featured in stories she wrote for Home Magazine the first one being called ‘Rice Mould’ and appearing in 1919. He proved so popular that a collection of these stories was published in 1922 under the title ‘Just William’. This first book proved so successful that within three years she was able to pay for a house to be built specifically for her and her mother – this house being The Glebe from which this letter is sent. In spite of the success of William (she went on to write a further 38 books about his adventures), Crompton actually saw her real work as her books of adult fiction and was frustrated that they never achieved the success of the William stories. In this connection, the reference to a meeting at Hutchison House is interesting as this was the head office of Hutchison publishing who were the publishers of much of her adult and ‘non-William’ work. The offices were actually located in what had been the upstairs bedrooms of the house with the rest of the premises given over to housing the collection of sporting art amassed by the firm’s slightly eccentric MD Walter Hutchison – including John Constable's Stratford Mill which Hutchison had justified as a sporting picture owing to the boys depicted fishing in the foreground. The recipient of the letter ‘Mrs Watt’ is almost undoubtedly her literary agent at the firm AP Watt Limited, a firm which continues to flourish today. DETAILED CONDITION REPORT : 2pp 17.8cm x 11.5cm.
