Lithograph by Allan and Wigley; 500 x 610 mm, the profiles and landmarks captioned. Rare. HMS Herald arrived in Sydney in 1853 under the command of Henry Mangles Denham. What followed was an exciting chapter in coastal exploration: "the arrival in Sydney on February 19th, 1853 of this scientific officer of long experience was an important event in the progress of the Australian marine surveys…during the nine years that Denham was in these waters he completed surveys totalling 200 sheets of charts, plans and drawings" (Ingleton, 'Charting A Continent'). Besides east coast exploration work the Herald also worked in Shark's Bay, Western Australia, the Fijian Islands, and Norfolk Island and was involved in the search for Benjamin Boyd throughout the Pacific, and in the wreck of the Dunbar just off Sydney Heads.
