Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian, and philosopher who exerted a profound influence on Victorian art, literature and philosophy. In this important work concerning the Chartist movement, Carlyle was the first to raise the 'condition-of-England question'. This Victorian debate concerned the discontent of the working classes and the economic changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. First published in 1839, this second edition was published when Chartism was at its height. The depression of 1842 led to worker strikes, including the Pottery Riot, and over a hundred people were imprisoned or transported. In the publisher's original cloth binding.
