It is considered by many authors to be a truly seminal work; Honor de Balzac considered it the most significant novel of his time, while Tolstoy was heavily influenced by Stendhal's treatment of the Battle of Waterloo. In half morocco bindings with marbled paper covered boards, and housed in a corresponding marbled paper covered slip case, with cloth lining. Fading to back strips, with boards exceptionally bright. Rubbing to joints of slip case, with some joints a little tender. Internally, firmly bound. Publisher's original paper wraps and back strips bound in to each volume. Pages clean and bright.
