Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Special Edition. PARKES, SAMUEL (1761-1825). The chemical catechism, with tables, notes, illustrations, and experiments. London: for the Author, and published by Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1822. TENTH EDITION, first with the magnificent folding frontispiece. 8 vo. The Publisher's Binding, contemporary three-quarter calf with marbled boards, with their gilt price at the foot of spine. xxxii, (2), 586 pp. The fine, detailed folding engraved frontispiece of a chemical laboratory by A.W. Warren after the drawing by Cornelius Varley + an engraved plate of apparatus. A significant A.L.S. from Parkes to his publisher dated Dec. 19, 1821 is tipped to the front pastedown. Parkes notes he now has 50 copies of his 'Rudiments of Chemistry' just back from the binders and he is sending them with a receipt that is to be signed. More importantly, Parkes reports that his "New Edition of the Catechism" is very nearly finished (he dated his Preface Jan. 31, 1822), but the engraver of the "New folding plate for the frontispiece" had deceived him and that it will be yet a fortnight before he will get it from him. Of further interest to this copy, an 1852 owner (name erased) has added in an elegant hand considerable erudite notes and comments (including a neat drawing of apparatus for the preparation of nitric acid) on a number of tipped in sheets and occasionally in the margins. One of these is an extended anecdote concerning Dr. Cooper (i.e. Thomas Cooper, 1759-1839) of South Carolina. Upper front joint cracked and repaired, occasional spotty foxing; a very good copy. In addition to the special attributes of this copy discussed above, the tenth edition of Samuel Parkes' popular 'Chemical catechism' is the first to have the remarkably detailed folding frontispiece engraving of a well-outfitted chemical laboratory of the period. This illustration was drawn by the successful British watercolorist, Cornelius Varley (1781-1873), who is also known for his designs of a number of optical instruments including his graphic telescope (1811). This engraving is often reproduced in secondary sources, e.g. fig. 62 of 'Natural science books in English 1600-1900' (1972) by David Knight; about actual size reproduction in P.J.T. Morris, The Matter Factory - A history of the chemistry laboratory (2015), fig. 39. Also here one finds on page 500, Experiment 79, Parkes' very early description of an experiment which may have resulted in the formation of a gold colloid. Faraday's last major paper published in the Philosophical Transactions (1857) concerned his experiments with such metallic colloids. See Neville II. 263-265 for discussion of various editions of this book, though this 10th edition is lacking from the collection. Cole 1004. Smith Coll., p.376. Signed by Author(s).
