Two volumes of Lord Byron's lengthy narrative poem, in a attractive uniform leather binding. In a lovely morocco J Edmond of Aberdeen binding. With a folding Greek facsimile plate to the rear of volume I. Volume I is the third edition of the first two cantos in addition to further poems. Volume II is the first edition, third impression, of the fourth canto with three footnotes to page 217 instead of two, and four footnotes to page 218 rather than five. This text is in accordance with further issue points referred to by Wise (p.62). Childe Harold's Pilgrimage describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man who, disillusioned with a life of pleasure and revelry. The poem is an allegory for the melancholy and disillusionment felt by a generation weary of both the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. In full morocco bindings with gilt stamping to the spines and board edges. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing to the spine and to the extremities. Some marks to boards. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper, J Edmond, Aberdeen. Prior owner's notations on the editions to verso of endpaper to volume I. Prior owner's pencil notations to rear endpaper of volume II.
