Beschreibung
This somewhat overlooked work from Dickens first appeared in serial form in "Household Words" 1851-1853, and was published in book form in three separate volumes in December of 1851, 1852 and 1853, but dated the following years (i.e. 1852-1854). At some point the three volumes were made into two, and it is the two volumes that appear in this complete omnibus edition. Volume 1 taking the reader from "Ancient Times to the Reign of Henry the Fifth" with Volume 2 going up to "The Revolution of 1688", with a brief final chapter to conclude things up to 1837. There are fourteen full page steel engraved illustrations, and two maps. This copy is a bit of a mystery. The spine is painted with library numbers but the book carries no other signs of being a library book, and in fact is so tight and clean that it looks hardly opened. The only defect I see is a short tear to the top of the title page of Volume Two, coming, of course, about half way through the book. Speckled edges. A very good copy indeed, possibly re-bound.
