Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Chimurenga (2004) by Various. Chimurenga. ISBN: 9781919855271. Condition: Good. A compact magazine/zine-style publication. Some publications are impossible to pigeonhole. They aren?t quite magazines, not quite journals, not quite books and certainly not something you?d casually leaf through while waiting for the kettle to boil. Chimurenga belongs proudly in that category. Published in 2004, this compact publication is perhaps best described as a literary and cultural zine with serious ambitions. It sits somewhere between independent journalism, contemporary art, political commentary and creative writing, all wrapped up in a format that cheerfully ignores the normal rules about what a magazine ought to look like. In many ways, it feels exactly as independent publishing should. It asks questions rather than offering easy answers. It assumes its readers are curious, patient and willing to follow ideas that occasionally wander down fascinating side streets. This is emphatically not the sort of publication that promises "Ten Amazing Secrets You?ll Never Believe!" on the cover. In fact, it rather suspects those sorts of headlines are part of the problem. The title itself hints at resistance and change, and the contents reflect that spirit. Contributors explore politics, music, literature, identity, culture and contemporary Africa from perspectives that are often overlooked by mainstream publishing. Rather than simplifying complex issues into convenient soundbites, Chimurenga invites readers to linger over them, occasionally requiring a second reading?and sometimes a third?to appreciate exactly where an argument is heading. That is one of its greatest strengths. Reading an independent publication from the early 2000s is also oddly nostalgic. This was a moment when small presses and cultural magazines still occupied a rather magical space between photocopied fanzines and today?s endlessly scrolling digital feeds. Editors could afford to be gloriously niche, writers could develop ideas over several pages rather than several hundred characters, and readers were expected to concentrate for more than twelve uninterrupted seconds. One cannot help admiring the confidence of publications like this. They never seem remotely concerned about appealing to everybody. Instead, they quietly assume that the right readers will eventually find them. It is a philosophy that commercial publishing has occasionally misplaced in its pursuit of airport bookshops and algorithmic recommendations. Physically, this is more akin to a small magazine or zine than a conventional book , which only adds to its appeal. There is something wonderfully tactile about independent print culture?the slightly unconventional format, the thoughtful design and the sense that someone cared deeply enough about the ideas inside to put them onto paper rather than leave them drifting around the internet until the next software update erased them from history. This copy remains in good condition , preserving both its contents and its distinctive character. It will appeal to collectors of independent publishing, African cultural studies, little magazines, alternative journalism and anyone who enjoys discovering publications that deliberately chose the road less travelled?and then wrote a thoughtful essay about why the road existed in the first place. From Crappy Old Books ?because not every publication is trying to become a bestseller. Some simply want to start an interesting conversation. This little volume does exactly that, proving that the most stimulating things on a bookshelf are sometimes the ones that refuse to fit neatly between "Magazine" and "Book." THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE BOOK, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER BOOK IN BETTER CONDITION SOMEWHER.…
