Beschreibung
Enguerrand de Monstrelet's chronicles of fifteenth century France, from the Savile Club Library. 'Containing an account of the cruel Civil Wars between the houses of Orleans and Burgundy, of the posession of Paris and Normandy by the English, their expulsion thence, and of other memorable events that happened in the Kingdom of France, as well as in other countries. Beginning at the Year MCCCC where that of Sir John Froissart finished, and ending at the Year MCCCCLXVII and continued by others to the Year MDXVI'. Comprising Volumes VIII, X and XI of thirteen volumes. The French chronicler Enguerrand de Monstrelet (c1400-1453), belonged to a noble Picardy family. His writings concern the latter part of the Hundred Years' War and were based on documents and interviews. For instance, he witnessed the interview of Joan of Arc with Philip, Duke of Burgundy. The Savile Club was formed in 1868 as the informal 'New Club'. Its expanding membership moved to premises on Savile Row, and the name changed accordingly. Membership was varied, but included writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kipling. The club has an extensive library. In full vellum Savile Club bindings. Externally, a little shelfwear. Faint red mark to rear board of Volume XI. Internally, generally firmly bound, although page 289-290 of Volume VIII is coming away. Intermittent light foxing. 'Savile Club' ink ownership stamps and shelfmark labels to front pastedowns. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers FGN11-E-5
