[xxviii], 917, [xv] pp. Index. Small octavo measuring 7.5" x 4.5" In beautiful speckled full panelled calf with stamped decorations at the corners, rebacked relatively recently with 5 raised bands, gilt decorations and a red morocco label in the compartments, renewed end pages. Polished red fore-edge. Edges of original blanks are browned. Engraved title page showing the abduction of Prosperina by Pluto in the foreground and the battle of the Titans against the Gods in the back. An old signature of C. J. Bathurst on the title page (possible one of the 1st Earl of Bathurst's 36 grandchildren! ). Latin text above, two-column notes below, some occasional light foxing or small stain, but otherwise clean and sturdy. A very nice copy in a handsome binding. Claudian wrote during an exciting time in history, and his works reflect the era. During his lifetime, Arcadius and Honorius, the weak sons of the last sole Roman emperor, Theodosius I, became weak puppets of strong generals and government ministers. Theodosius fought a fierce and bloody battle in 394 against the forces of the usurper Eugenius at the River Frigidus in which both Alaric the Visigoth and the master general Flavius Stilicho led imperial troops to victory. Claudian is considered by many to have been the last great poet of the ancient world. The editor, Nicolaas Heinsius, the son of the great classics scholar Daniel Hensius, was a Dutch classical scholar, writer and diplomat who was appointed the official historian of the City of Amsterdam the same year this book was printed. He was also the owner of one of the largest private libraries in Europe and over13,000 volumes were sold by his estate after his death in 1681. N. Heinsius was considered one of the purest and most elegant modern Latin poets. "Uncommon ed. , enriched with a beautiful frontispiece engraved after F. Edelinck." Brunet II-87. Dibdin calls this the "best variorum edition" of Claudian. Entirely in Latin. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 917 pages. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12425
