This contributed volume dives into the critical intersection of climate adaptation, vulnerability to hazards, and the imperative of decarbonization in fortifying global food and nutritional security. This comprehensive exploration aims to shed light on the challenges our food systems face in the wake of climate change, and the strategies required to ensure resilience and sustainability.

In the face of escalating climate challenges, securing sustenance demands a comprehensive approach. Climate adaptation becomes paramount, as agricultural systems struggle with increased vulnerabilities to various hazards. From extreme weather events to shifting precipitation patterns, the agricultural landscape is under constant threat. The decarbonization imperative emerges as a critical strategy, addressing the dual goals of mitigating climate change and enhancing food and nutritional resilience. By reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to sustainable practices, we not only contribute to global climate goals but also fortify food systems against environmental shocks. This integrated approach acknowledges the intricate connections between climate, agriculture, and nutrition, emphasizing the urgency of concerted efforts to ensure a resilient and sustainable future for food production and consumption. This book includes in-depth case studies from different regions, showcasing the diverse impacts of climate change on food systems.

This book will integrate insights from multiple disciplines such as environmental science, agriculture, policy studies, and community engagement, providing a more holistic understanding of the issues at hand. It will serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers and practitioners seeking in-depth knowledge on these interconnected topics.

Dr. S. Ananda Babu has a PhD from Osmania University (OU), India. He is a societal awareness specialist and scholar, an author and editor of numerous books including several on Disaster Risk Reduction, Community Resilience and Responses. In addition, Dr. S Ananda Babu is the Founder President of the Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS) and the Convener of the World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) established in 2005. In the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, to enhance understanding and awareness among people about the risk of various types and dimensions of disasters and the measures to be taken for reducing the risks, for better preparedness, response, and recovery, the DMICS and the WCDM have taken on the task of creating awareness through multi-disciplinary research, publications, and multi-stake holder consultations. The World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) is a unique initiative of DMICS bring researchers, policy makers and practitioners from around the world to a common platform to discuss various challenging issues of disaster risk management. Under Dr. Ananda Babu’s leadership, the first WCDM took place in 2008 in the Hitech city of Hyderabad and was inaugurated by Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, former President of India, with Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh presiding over the inaugural function. Delegates representing various international, regional, national, state, and local governments, UN bodies, scientific and technical organizations, universities, civil society organizations, corporate sector and media attended the Congress. Dr. S Ananda Babu's research is closely aligned with the mission of WCDM, to promote the interaction of science, policy, and practices to enhance the understanding of risks and to advance actions for reducing risks and building resilience to disasters.
