The present-day importance of Richter s Codex is two-fold: not only does it provide the user with a single point of access to the many titles and editions of Linnaeus botanical works, but it is uniquely useful as a guide to the pre-Linnaean botanical literature and its synonymy. By consulting Petermann s Alphabetic Index, any phrase-name or polynomial published by a pre-Linnaean authority can be equated with its Linnaean binomial equivalent, and its full Linnaean synonymy ascertained by referring to the main body of the Codex.
