Fourth edition; printed in 1809 [first published in London, in 1808, and widely reprinted, reaching the twelfth edition by 1809]. xii, 415; [vi], 430pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Laid into the book is a three-page autograph letter(on single sheet, folded to make four octavo pages), April 19, 1809/ 11 Trinity Sq., from Henry White, "To Mis's A & E Moxon." "Henry White most respectfully requests that his very amiable young friends will permit him to have the honor of introducing 'Coelebs' to their library.". The letter continues with erudite references to the author of the letter, and restrained praise for the book. The correspondence is written on fragile, acidic paper, with few moderate tears and splitting at folds (with two early, long tape mends at folds, slightly affecting one line of text). Henry White may be The Reverend Henry White (1761-1836), of Lichfield, a noted book collector, friend of Samuel Johnson and grandson of John Hunter (Samuel Johnson's headmaster). The recipients of the letter, A. and E. Moxon, presumably were related to the British publishing family, Moxon. Given Hannah More's early association with the Samuel Johnson circle, an interesting correspondence. Early London bookseller's label on front pastedown of first volume ("G. Richards"). "The Evangelical philanthropist Hannah More (1745-1833) provides an indispensable link between the Georgian and Victorian periods. Born just before the last Jacobite rebellion, she lived to see the beginnings of the railway age. In her youth she was the friend of David Garrick, Samuel Johnson, and Horace Walpole. In middle age she was closely connected with William Wilberforce and his fellow Evangelicals in the Clapham sect. In her retirement she welcomed two promising children to her home in Somerset, William Ewart Gladstone and Thomas Babington Macaulay. As well as working among the poor, Hannah More continued her connections with polite society, and produced a series of conduct books, of which the most famous was Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education (1799). The message of Strictures was that women had been short-changed, fobbed off with a trivial education that left them unfitted to be companionable wives, rational mothers, or moral examples to the wider society. It was a message reinforced by her most ambitious conduct-book, Hints Towards Forming the Character of a Young Princess (1805) written anonymously for the young Princess Charlotte and in her only novel, Coelebs in Search of a Wife(1808)" [Stott, The Victorian Web]. Text is attributed to Hannah More by Halkett & Laing (Vol. I, p. 369) Bound in full contemporary black morocco, spines stamped in gilt, in six compartments, raised bands, covers ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, p, all edges gilt. Early London bookseller's label on front pastedown of first volume ("G. Richards"). Covers rubbed, with moderate wear along edges of spine, and tips of corners, of both volumes, rear cover of Vol. I, and front cover of Vol. II, have short closed tear at crown of spine, else a very good, tight set, with the text quite clean xii, 415; [vi], 430pp. 2 vols. 8vo Fourth edition; printed in 1809 [first published in London, in 1808, and widely reprinted, reaching the twelfth edition by 1809].
