Alston IX 2; ESTC R14631. First published in 1674. John Ray (formerly Wray), 1627-1705, was a naturalist, Cambridge scholar, theologian and member of the Royal Society. Much of his work derived from his extensive European travels with Francis Willughby between 1663 and 1666. This period established the basis for his collaboration with Willughby. Their travels 'generated evidence about antiquities, customs, and language, which Ray shared with Willughby and deployed himself in the Collection of English Proverbs (1670) and his Collection of English Words'.
