Laqueur authored more than a dozen books, including The Long Road to Freedom and Glasnost and Stalin: The Glasnost Revelations. He was especially influential in the subjects of political violence and terrorism. In 1938 he left Germany, going to the British Mandate of Palestine. His parents, who could not leave Germany, were killed in the Holocaust. Laqueur worked as a journalist for the newspapers Mishmar, and The Palestine Post. After moving to London he started the Soviet Study, a journal that focused on East European and Soviet culture. The Soviet Study was partly funded by the Congress for Cultural Freedom. Later with George Mosse, he founded and edited the Journal of Contemporary History. He was a professor at Brandeis University and Georgetown University. He was also a visiting professor at Harvard University, Tel Aviv University, and John Hopkins University. He wrote extensively on Communism and the Soviet Union, the Cold War, fascism, the German Youth Movement, Zionism, post-WW2 Europe, and the middle east. His work on international affairs appeared in many European and American periodicals and newspapers.
