Four-page newsprint flyer folded into thirds. Very Good condition. Very light wear to edges. Biography of Colonel James Willis Nesmith extracted from Julian Hawthorne's History of Oregon. James Willis Nesmith was a US Senator and a US Representative for Oregon between 1861-1875. He died in 1880. In 1910, there was an initiative petition to create a new county in western Oregon, carving land out of Douglas and Lane Counties. The language on the ballot read: "A bill for an act to create, the County of Nesmith out of a portion of the northern part of Douglas County and the southern part of Lane County; providing for its organization, fixing the salaries of the officers thereof, and for adjusting finances between the three counties. --- Vote YES or NO." The ballot measure was defeated. In addition to Nesmith's biography, this pamphlet contains a map of Oregon with the proposed boundary of the new county with explanation. There is also a sample of arguments against Nesmith County. Most likely published early in 1910. No publisher or printer noted.
