Beschreibung
Size of Volume: 13 ½ in. wide, 20 in. high, 3 ¼ thick. Approximately 210 issues from Volumes 2 & 3 published during the years 1810--1812. Each issue consists of four pages (two leaves); some have a one- or two-page supplement attached. The issues are not bound in chronological order. A few issues are duplicated; other issues are missing; and some issue numbers have been used twice. Issue Nos. 125 (2/27/11) and [136] (4/6/11) were trimmed with loss of some text; Issue Nos. 160 (6/15/11), 272 (7/22/12), 281 (8/22/12), [302] (10/24/12), have had items clipped out. Issue No. 302 (10/28/12) has an item clipped our and a tear to the paper with some text missing. (A bracketed Issue No. means that the number was used on two different issues.) Issue Nos. No. 174 (8/17/11); 176 (8/24/11); 199 (11/13/11): 201 (11/20/11); 205 (12/4/11); 202 (11/23/11); and 203 (11/27/11) have supplements. No. 267 (7/3/12) has a supplement which includes a list of names of men registered as an "Additional Army" for the War of 1812. Of historical interest are the following: Issue No. 206 (12/7/11) contains an "Extra No. 6" devoted to the Battle of Tippecanoe (in which Wm. Henry Harrison, then governor of Indiana Territory, received the sobriquet which helped him win the White House in 1840.) Issue No. 246 (4/25/12) is devoted to the death of George Clinton; No. 303 (10/31/12) mentions the publication of "General Lee's Memoirs" in two volumes. This General Lee was the father of Robert E. Lee and led American forces in the South during the Revolutionary War. Less important historically, but still of interest, are No. 143 (5/1/11) which has a note in ink identifying as "George Bloom" the author of an article signed only as "Whig"; and No. [161] (7/3/11) which has an ad for a fireworks display giving the many types of fireworks to be set off. Many of the later issues are noteworthy for their information regarding the War of 1812 (which technically began in June of that year with Congress's declaration of War) and the events leading up to it (including impressments and agitation of the Indians by the British.) Some issues show trimming to the top or bottom edge with the loss of a few letters of text. Some general age-related tanning as well as tan spotting is present to various issues. Bound with an old brown leather spine, sides, and corner pieces with a maroon leather title label with gilt designs and gilt titling, reading: "Columbian For the Country, Vol. 2, 3, and 4; Dec. 15, 1810 Dec. 30. 1812." Marbled paper over thick boards. The leather on the spine shows age-related wear, with chipping to the ends, hinges, and sides. The front cover is present but detached. The outer covers show considerable wear, with some of the marbled paper worn and showing stains. The leather corner pieces show wear and chipping. On the inner front cover and fly-leaf there is foxing. This volume once belonged to John B. Ireland, author of "From Wall Street to Cashmere" (1859). From the collection of William G. Mather (1857-1951), a Cleveland, Ohio-based book collector who was related by marriage to the Irelands. This volume requires proper binding restoration. Weight is 12.5 lbs. Postage may be extra on this item. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers m-534
