Phinney, Jun, and Sold by Them and by L. & I. Todd, Wholesale and Retail, 1811, 226 pp plus table of contents, early leather handmade dust jacket, 7 x 4.5 , 12mo. In fair condition. An unusual early American handmade dust jacket covers the boards. Moderate scuffing to extremities with rounded corners, light crushing and dryness at edges. Small area of worming to rear board at proper left. Scuffed and scratched overall with some dampness stain. Pastedowns have original linen string sewn exposed. Quite interesting to see as handmade bindings are scarce. Vincent St. Jon s Book written in old hand on the fly along with a bookplate of Nelson A. St. John, a descendent of Vincent. The fly and title are quite darkened and chipped at edges. Textblock is rounded in nature, likely intentional by the printer or whoever bound the book. Light toning throughout with some typical age stain. Vincent has signed the rear fly as well, which is quite toned and chipped. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. An incredibly scarce text printed in Ostego, New York with a rare a very early homemade leather dust jacket. An interesting and valuable piece of early Americana.
