Beschreibung
Three illustrated volumes of Beckett's Comic Histories of Rome and England. Gilbert Abbott à Beckett (9 January 1811 30 August 1856) was an English humorist, and belonged to a family claiming descent from Thomas Becket. A'Beckett's intention, as stated in the Preface, was to 'blend amusement with instruction, by serving up, in as palatable a shape as he could, the facts of English History.' With chapters on many influential moments in history, including the reign of Elizabeth I, the Treaty of Utrecht, The Great Fire of London and much more. Illustrated throughout with 30 coloured plates (collated complete) and numerous illustrations in the text by John Leech. Ex-libris bookplates of Louis Stromeyer Little. Complete in three volumes. In decorative blue cloth bindings. Externally, sound, though with bumping to the extremities, and some fading to the spine also. Wear to the head and tail of the other spine. Hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although binding strained in places. Pages are bright, though with some scattered spotting throughout. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers SET43-B-3
