8 1/2 by 11-inch (quarto) program booklet from the first solo concert given by Maria Callas in the U.S.A., a performance with full orchestra, at the Opera House, Chicago, for the benefit of the "Hungarian Relief and The Alliance Francaise Scholarship Fund", on January 15, 1957. SIGNED in large letters "Maria Meneghini Callas" diagonally, on the second page (the verso of the front cover), which consists of an advertisement for her recordings. And made especially interesting by a number of very neatly inked comments from the owner of the program, entered on many of the 16 pages of this booklet, next to the list of opera arias which she sang that evening -- such as "Looks exquisite in gorgeous gown & diamonds!"; "Best" and then "Singing well, but not like I've heard before" (next to "In questa reggia" from "Turandot"); "Didn't take high note! Nevertheless beautifully sung. Brought back pleasant memories." (the Mad Scene from "Lucia"); and above the biographical notes at the end of the booklet, "What a cold, calculating woman!" and "Oh, to hear her in opera again as she was those two seasons [1954-1955] here in Chicago!"; and a few others equally interesting, commenting on both her singing and her physical appearance. Laid-in are 3 articles about the concert clipped from the following day's Chicago newspapers, 2 of them reviews, including that of Claudia Cassidy. Also laid-in, a page from the December 1957 issue of "Musical America", with a 3-paragraph article (plus photo) announcing S. Hurok's presentation of her U.S. concert tour "next season", mentioning this Chicago concert as 1 of only 3 she had so far given in this country. -- There are many signed photographs of Callas, but the fascinating comments penned into this program make it an unusually attractive and informative, "you are there", memento of her first appearance on the U.S. concert stage. -- In Fine condition. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 002149
