Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: In response to many requests from librarians at smaller public libraries and high school libraries, Fitzroy Dearborn plans to issue a series of abridged versions of its most notable encyclopedias: these concise encyclopedias will include much of the material in the larger encyclopedias at what we hope will be a very affordable price. The first in the series, the Concise Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature, will be published in June. The Concise includes: all entries on topics and countries -- those cited by many reviewers as being among the best entries in the book; entries on the 50 leading writers in Latin America from colonial times to the present; and detailed articles on some 50 important works in this literature -- those most read and studied in the English-speaking world. From Library Journal:
Smith, the editor of the original Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature (LJ 6/1/97), has done an excellent job of creating a more portable, certainly abbreviated, yet very useful and comprehensive desktop version of that 1000-page tome for quick reference. The editor has wisely decided to leave the survey articles on the literature of individual countries and topics in their entirety, and these serve as the backbone of the book. The articles on individual authors have been shortened, yet each entry, written by an expert, is a masterly description and evaluation of the writer's works, rounded out by a biography and a listing of selected works and of resources for further reading. There is also an attempt to cover areas not previously emphasized in other Latin American literature encyclopedias. This includes the work of Hispanic minorities in the United States and of the Francophone Caribbean, which is greatly influenced by the effects of European colonialism. This book belongs on the desk of every scholar of Latin American literature. Recommended for all libraries.DGlenn Masuchika, Rockwell Collins Info Ctr., Cedar Rapids, IA
