A Culture-based, Critical-thinking Approach to Learning and Using Spanish in Context

Conectándonos is a culture-based first year textbook that focuses on the analysis of language in its cultural context. By combining a textbook and website, Conectándonos engages students from the very beginning in the development of productive abilities as proposed by the Council on the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning.

Conectándonos:

• Presents learners with themes and topics that lead them to actively contrast and compare linguistic structures and cultural perspectives across Spanish varieties as well as between Spanish and English.
• Promotes the development of a learner-centered environment in which students can analyze data, find patterns of use and structure, make tentative hypotheses, and try them out.

• Systematically introduces learners to significant and systematic regional variations that provide students with the chance to understand a wide variety of representative regional accents and uses of Spanish that students will encounter in the real world in which the many varieties of Spanish are used.
• Provides students with strategies needed to develop useful language skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, pronunciation, and cultural analysis.
• Integrates cultural information throughout the majority of sections of every chapter.
