The Congo and the Founding of its Free State: A Story of Work and Exploration These volumes are from the library of the prominent African American family of John Wesley Cromwell who in 1887 was described as "the best English scholar in the United States." And his granddaugter Dr. Adelaide Cromwell Hill who was the first African-American faculty member hired by Smith College. She went on to be a sociology professor at Boston University, where she founded the African American Studies program. She died in june, 2020 at the age of 99.Both volumes are signed by Adelaide C. (Cromwell) Hill in pencil at the top of the front endpapers
