Second, revised edition. In two volumes. In original blue wrappers with white title vignette on spine. [4], (5), 6-323, (1) p.; (5), 6-317, (1) p. First appearance of the French translation of the 1787 Federal Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, published in the scarce, second edition of the constitutions of the thirteen states. The original French edition of the state constitutions was made at the instigation of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) and was published in 1783 in the translation of the French nobleman Louis Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld d'Enville (1743-1792), including over fifty footnote annotations by Franklin. Besides The Constitutions of the several independent states of America, it also includes the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation between the said states, the treaties of amity and commerce, and of alliance, between the U.S. and France as well as the treaties of amity and commerce concluded with Sweden and the Netherlands, between 1768 and 1783. This 1792 edition is important for including for the first time the text of the Federal Constitution, as well as the Bill of Rights, using the twelve amendments proposed to the First Congress, only ten of which were passed. It is also significant as it was published during the French Revolution, and was probably created to aid the French revolutionaries drafting their own constitution. Howes C-716. Sabin 16120. Wormholes on the upper edge of most leaves of the first two quires of the first volume. Light foxing throughout in both volumes, more intense on the first 18 leaves of the first. Pages slightly yellowed and dusted at the extremities. A few pages dog-eared. Page 76 and 228 of volume two misnumbered. Complete. Overall both volumes are clean and firm, in fine condition. (hoL). This edition includes the Federal Constitution and that of the Bill of Rights appear for the first time. Published by the efforts of Benjamin Franklin and translated by Duc de la Rochefoucauld. The original French edition of the constitution was published through the efforts of Benjamin Franklin in 1783. It was translated by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld, and annotated by him, and included the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the treaties made between the United States and the countries of France, Sweden and the Netherlands. These are in this edition as well, but the significance of this edition lies in the fact that the text of the Federal Constitution and that of the Bill of Rights appear for the first time. This is not surprising; the work was very possibly employed as a piece of propaganda during this critical year of the French Revolution, when the Tuileries was invaded, the revolutionary Commune established, the royal family imprisoned, the Republic proclaimed in September, and power seized by the Jacobins, who began to draft their own constitution. First French edition of the 1787 Federal Constitution, in addition to the thirteen state constitutions, the Declaration d'Independance, Articles de Confederation; and several treaties. Howes C-716. This was Kenneth Nebenzahl's copy, with his book label inside the portfolio. An uncut copy, in very attractive original condition. Translated and published at the suggestion of Benjamin Franklin, who likely contributed footnotes. He wrote in late 1783: "The extravagant Misrepresentations of our Political State in foreign Countries, made it appear necessary to give them better information, which I though could not be more efectually and authentically done, than by publishing a Translation into French.". This edition also includes the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the treaties between the United States and France, the Low Countries, and Sweden. This 1792 edition in two volumes is significant for including the text of the Federal Constitution as well as the Bill of Rights (using the twelve amendments proposed to the first Congress, only ten of which were passed). Translated by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld. Two octavo volumes (7 5/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 194 x 120 mm). [2, blank], [4], 324, [2, blank]; [1]-317, [1, blank] pp. Full mottled sheep. It is difficult to date the binding but it looks to be it's first binding and the book is unread. Boards tooled in gilt. Each volume stamped in gilt with red morocco spine label, and small blue morocco volume number label, lettered in gilt. Board edges tooled in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown of both volumes. About fine. "The original French edition of the state constitutions was inspired by Franklin and appeared in 1783, and translated by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld, at Franklin's suggestion. The date of this edition of the American constitutions is significant, coming in the midst of the French Revolution, and at a point when the French revolutionaries were drafting their own constitution. This edition was probably created to aid in that project." (National Book Auctions). "In 1783, La Rochefoucauld finally published under his own name a translation of the American founding documents with the title Constitutions des treize Etats-Unis de l'Amérique . This book, which had been revised by Franklin, provided for the first time the complete translations of all state constitutions as well as a translation of the declaration, and it seems to have been the main source for the members of the National Assembly."
