This anthology is limited to American poets born in the 20th century and who earned their full reputation after the beginning of World War II. Some were born after the war was over, which covers the near end of contemporary. This is the place to say that there are good poets, and considerably more good poems, not included. Choices had to be made, and that there is no way to defend the choices except to say, Here is the sum total of them. Any anthology is its own defense, or there isn't any. If the editor can't offer any defense, however, he can offer some explanation along the way. On the biographies: Each of the poets living at the time the anthology got under way was invited to write an autobiographical note, either in the first or third person. Some accepted the invitation; some chose not to, which is why some of the biographies are in the words of the editor, and some are in the words of the poets. If the editor has sometimes summed up a poet's life flatly, the failing is in the editor and not the life. On the photographs: The poets were also invited to send their own pictures and were urged to make them as casual as they liked, even to shots from a Woolworth's photo booth. Some accepted the invitation; some chose to leave it to the editor to search out a picture. A publisher's promotional shot is not very interesting, and often it is not very believable, but in some cases that's what it came down to. Here the editor disclaims responsibility. …
