Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Original publisher's dark olive-green cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. 6 1/2" x 9 1/4." 607 pages, complete. Black-and-white illustrations, complete. Index in back. Pages are clean and intact overall, but there is a former owner's pink stamp ("Chas. N. Wheeler") on front pastedown, and many of the pages have a subtle sticky film (some are slightly adhered together), slight rippling, and faint spots of discoloration. Covers are very clean and intact except for a few small stains on front, slight bumping to bottom edge on front, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. This book contains the text of eighty "nature-study" leaflets intended for use by teachers to instruct their students on the discipline of nature-study which is the practice of observing natural subjects (such as animals and the natural environment) and making logical conclusions from those observations. Nature-study is described herein as an academic discipline, that, while not a formal science, prepares students for more formal disciplines such as biology, physics, geology, and agriculture. The leaflets are organized into "Teachers' Leaflets" and "Children's Leaflets" and are authored by various contributors. The leaflets are brief essays or articles with informative descriptions about the natural world and its inhabitants. Some of the leaflets have suggested questions teachers can ask students to facilitate their studies. Titles under "Teachers' Leaflets": "The Schoolhouse," "What Is Nature-Study?," "The Nature-Study Movement," "An Appeal to the Teachers of New York State," "What Is Agricultural Education?," "Suggestions for Nature Study Work," "A Summer Shower," "A Snow Storm," "A Handful of Soil: What It Is," "A Handful of Soil: What It Does," "The Brook," "Insect Life of a Brook," "Life in an Aquarium," "A Study of Fishes," "The Opening of a Cocoon," "A Talk About Spiders," "Life History of the Toad," "Life in a Terrarium," "Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects," "Some Tent-Makers," "Mosquitoes," "The Ways of the Ant," "The Birds and I," "The Early Birds," "The Woodpeckers," "The Chickadee," "The White-Breasted Nuthatch," "About Crows," "How a Squash Plant Gets Out of the Seed," "How the Trees Look in the Winter," "One Way of Drawing Trees in Their Winter Aspects," "Four Apple Twigs," "The Burst of Spring," "Evergreens and How They Shed Their Leaves," "The Clovers and Their Kin," "How Plants Live Together," "Planting a Plant," "Cuttings and Cuttings," "A Children's Garden," "A Hill of Potatoes," "The Hepatica," "Jack-in-the-Pulpit," "Indian Corn," "The Ripened Corn," "The Uses of Food Stores in Seeds," "The Life History of a Beet," "Pruning," "Study of a Tree," "The Maple in February," "The Red Squirrel or Chickaree," and "Improvement of School Grounds."
