Excerpt from The Cornell Wordsworth Collection: A Catalogue of Books and Manuscripts Presented to the University by Mr. Victor Emanuel, Cornell 1919

Upon the death of Mrs St John in 1919, the collection was offered for sale. No immediate purchaser appeared; the price, quite justly, was high. The books were removed from Ithaca to be exhibited elsewhere, and a number of rival institutions appointed committees, summoned supporters, and began to collect funds. At that point Mr Emanuel came forward, acquired the library, and returned it to Ithaca as a gift to his university.
