A large printed broadside illustrating the coronation of William IV and Queen Adelaide in 1831. The upper half comprises woodcut figures of the coronation procession, with the King and Queen, their attendants and officers, and the regalia, while the lower half reports the formation of the procession from St James's Palace to Westminster, surrounded by woodcuts of the King and Queen, the Coronation Chair, Imperial Crown, and the regalia. A large central view of the east end of the Abbey is likely drawn from other images, seemingly confusing the piers of Henry V's chapel for the organ casing, which should in fact be behind the viewer. The text at foot notes that "The Engravings in this Sheet are taken from Nos. 17 and 18 of the London Spy. The London Spy, Published every Saturday, Price 2d. is, without doubt, the cheapest Periodical of the present day". Both the London Spy and indeed the broadside were aimed at those of lower means; there is a slight crudity to the broadside which reflects this market, and sets it apart from the lavish souvenirs which were often produced for Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian coronations - at the same time, it reflects the popular enthusiasm from all classes of society for the coronation and British monarchy. Broadside, 446 x 546 mm, letterpress printed with numerous woodcut illustrations, within typographic border, 'Price One Penny'; partially mounted on modern card.
