The second edition. Published at 9 guineas in boards. Folio (37.5 x 27.5cm). 'The seventh and last volume of an importatnt series of books on costume illustrated chiefly in stipple and published by W. Miller between 1801 and 1808. Pyne's book, designed, engraved and written by himself, is by far the best of the series, and the charm noticeable in groups and rustic figures of The Miscrocosm is even more apparent where he is illustrating old English customs and occupations. He had an instinct for the different types of the working classes.'- Prideaux. pp. [4],iv,[120]. With a coloured vignette title and 60 fine hand coloured plates. A later issue of the second edition dated 1808 on the title, the text watermarked 1804 & the plates with 1817 watermarks. However, an exceptional copy, the plates delicately & finely coloured with coloured backgrounds, the text & plates clean & fresh with only some occasional & light offseting of the plates onto text leaves. Bound in contemporary dark-blue straight-grained morocco, the boards & spine richly gilt with some light rubbing, aeg. Small neat modern bookplate to front endpaper. VG.
