Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

[12], 84, 89-172, 192-460, [12]pp, with preliminary and final blanks. Some irregularities in pagination, but complete. Folio. Some age toning to several gatherings, a number of leaves heavily affected, waterstain to head of pp89-90, but generally a clean copy. Contemporary blind ruled calf, expertly rebacked, gilt panelled spine. Armorial bookplate of William Clayton. ESTC R29291. The work, first published in 1618, became the standard work on the duties of Justices of the Peace. The final edition was published in 1746. In Chaper CXVIII Dalton included guidelines to deal with witches and witchcraft, emphasising the need for body searches to find evidence of demonic contact, and stating that it was acceptable to undertake 'the examination and confession of children.' It also references the Pendle Witch Trials, 'that were arraigned at Lancaster, Anno 1612'.
