Frontispiece with tissue guard, vignette title page, numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Preface by Anne Thackeray Ritchie. Gift inscription from Susy Sayer to her husband Rockwell Sayer dated September 29, 1896 on the first blank leaf. Rockwell Sayer (aka Sayre) was a Chicago banker best known for his long-running crusade against cats best represented in his 1921 opinion piece arguing for the abolition (by which he meant extermination) of cats published with an opposing viewpoint by Mrs. George Kessel, the National Secretary of the American Cat Association (see Bisbee Review, November 27, 1921). ODNB, 'Gaskell [nee Stevenson], Elizabeth Cleghorn', Jenny Uglow. An attractive example of one of Gaskell's most popular novels, a loosely connected series of satirical sketches, with an unusual association.
