He also held political office as Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841 and Paymaster-General between 1846 and 1848. In 1825 he published a prominent essay on Milton in the Edinburgh Review. With a dedication by the author to Francis Jefferey. Bound by J. Low, with binder's label to front pastedowns. In a morocco binding. Externally, smart but with some wear to extremities and occasional slight marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout but with slight foxing to endpapers only.
