Inhaltsangabe: When Kate and Ben move house, they are disappointed to find that all the garden contains is a crooked old tree. But as the seasons pass, the changing tree inspires all kinds of games. The garden becomes the icy North Pole, a dangerous jungle and a swamp filled with gold.
From School Library Journal:
PreS-Gr 2-This British import deals with a family moving to a new house. On the way there, Kate and Ben wonder what they will find in the "garden." After hoping for a cave or a pond, they are disappointed to discover only a crooked, old apple tree. Dad encourages the children to use their imaginations, and as the seasons change, so does the tree, inspiring many different games. In the spring, the siblings imagine that the blossoms are snowflakes; in the summer, thick leaves make a perfect jungle; and in the fall, they pretend to steal magic apples from a wizard. After a year has passed, Mom and Dad give the children a photo album filled with pictures taken of them while they played their "tree-games." The pleasant, realistic watercolor illustrations depict Kate and Ben as they pretend to search for the North Pole, dig for gold, or cast magic spells. This book would be well suited to reading aloud; however, the use of the term "garden" will have to be explained, as most children will visualize a flower or vegetable garden instead of their own backyard.-Susan Knell, Pittsburgh State University, Pittsburgh, KS
