New Edition. Red cloth with blind embossed borders, silver titles on spine. Plain brown endpapers. Wear at head and tail of spine and stain or water-mark on front cover (see photos), otherwise a tight, intact copy. Includes a personal and rather snarky introduction in which he recommends (or corrects) the interpretations of myths by other scholars. Lang shared a common view among 19th century scholars that myths and tales were distributed, rather than independently developed, among different cultures. He allowed for coincidence in the similarities between US Native myths and those of classical mythology. The concept of the monomyth as described by Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung had yet to emerge.
